On Peace
It has been a decade since the fall of Wynter and the loss of Lydria into the Melting Grae. In that time there was been peace in Wesolk, peace in DarâAhlmon, peace in Eifynar, peace in Nethyngal and Safarngal, peace in Solwyn, and peace between all these places.
Peace is something that sits uneasily with men and with the Chag CaâGrae. Only with the Eifen is peace a fleeting partner; but the Eifen rarely live in such close proximity to men as they do here. Though they have no one to fight, the armies of these people continue to train, to build, to prepare for something that has been all but abolished since most of those who would fight could lift a stick.
They are right to do so. Though Burvig suggests that perhaps there is a time to lay aside oneâs armaments, there is another thought that says this time should be used for honing the blades to their keenest edge. A long period of peace is a gift, all can agree, but what to do with that gift?
There are those who would send the guards home and use the resources to build. There are those who would maintain the armies as they are now and play out the peace as a kind of waking game. And there are others, who have studied the history of men, who would use this time to study and grow; build the weapons and ships and train those who would fight. It is this last group, I have decided, that must be correct; though I would rather side with any of the other factions and believe that this peace could last for my entire lifetime and the lifetime of my children. Yet this has never been before. Why should it be now?
When one considers how quickly a single man (Wynter) was able to form a society, build (or steal) an army, and hold absolute power over a large group of people, one must then consider what would happen if someone had the time to do such a thing properly. What would happen if someone had the same ideas as Wynter, but also had the time, the resources, and the will to wait? How easy it would be for that person to sweep across a continent, enslaving people by the thousands with nothing to hinder him except the mountains and rivers.
No, magic cannot hold evil at bay. Men and Women must do this. Magic can help, as can a sword or arrow, but behind each of those weapons lies a person who has been trained to use it and who has the desire to be free from the tyranny of people like Wynter.
The Dragons have made no secret of their desire to remain neutral in the dealings of men, and so we must assume they will remain neutral in the wars of men as well. If they will not be our sword and arrow, we must be our own though we may wish we forge and fletch in vain.
